Alexander Wang x UNIQLO

Alexander Wang x UNIQLO

Today marks the release of Alexander Wang’s collaboration with UNIQLO, a collection of essential yet chic basics in a signature fabric called “Heattech.” The designer describes his line in an interview with Vogue, saying,

Heattech is a program created out of innovation, function, and utility. It’s something that I’ve always been very inspired by, by the advancement and innovation in fabrication. I wanted to think about it in a way where even if it wasn’t just worn on the inside—if you wore it as a top as something to lounge around in—you feel like there’s a style, an aesthetic that could stand on its own.

As a designer whose creations are sported by celebrities ranging from Rihanna to Jennifer Lawrence, Wang’s release with UNIQLO is an innovative take on everyday essential items. The accessibility to his sleek designs is only enhanced by the affordability, priced within the $15-$40 range.

My only question? Did the line’s versatility and timeless design also extend to those of us who live and travel in locations where Heattech may be more of a discomfort than necessity? Could it truly be “warmth reimagined”?

I tried the women’s Heattech ribbed sleeveless bodysuit paired with Uniqlo’s high-rise boyfriend fit jean for a casual yet classic take on a weekend look. Amidst running around in Hawaii’s humidity, it was more comfortable than some of the basics I usually choose from my closet. The bodysuit was cool & didn’t seem to generate any extra heat, though I could imagine it as a valuable layer for travels in cooler weather.

Next, I tested out some of the “inner wear” - the Heattech bra paired with the Heattech ribbed leggings. I was surprised by soft and sturdy design of the bra, designed more like activewear, and easy to imagine as part of a more casual ensemble, with jeans and a sheer blouse or under a blazer. The leggings were thinner than I imagined. I was worried about them generating a lot of heat, but they were very comfortable and breathable.

In colder climates, I often wear leggings under pants for an extra layer of warmth. These leggings are perfect for layering, as they don’t add unnecessary bulk. However, their sheer nature is something I would keep out of yoga classes. I know they will be a staple in my travel wardrobe.

In addition, the subtle front facing logo and name gives the ensemble its designer edge, without the conspicuous flash that is ubiquitous in modern day luxury lines.
